The Power of Authenticity .
On Thursday I’ll be having my second exhibition this year with the launch of @houseofafricanart
One of the themes of the exhibition is the Power of Authenticity which encourages artists to express their true selves through their work and resist the need to feel that artists need to create artwork that fits into a particular notion, aesthetic or narrative. This is the idea that you have to do things based on other pre-conceived notions. You have to live for YOU.
The work I will be exhibiting is from a series called ’The Woman Code’ which explores Adire symbols created by Yoruba women in the early 20th century. At a time when women didn’t have a voice, Adire symbols were used to encode messages in plain site onto fabric. The symbols were a form of resistance and communication.
In the images I encoded the symbols onto modern day Yoruba women. The symbols are at home on the bodies of these women, its in most authentic and truest form.
Image: ’àsírí aládìre’ meaning the secrets of the woman who creates Adire.
The work will be showing at the Hoxton Arches from the 21st March for about a week. .
